Junior Brown: The Mercury Lounge, New York NY

John Swenson, Rolling Stone, 1 December 1994

JUNIOR BROWN is an institution among the guitar-playing aficionados of Austin, Texas. And judging from the number of people unable to squeeze their way into the inner sanctum of this music-biz haunt tonight, he's quickly picking up new fans in other parts of the country. Those who did get in pressed forward as Brown took the stage dressed in a plain dark suit and tie and straw cowboy hat creased violently on both sides. The accompaniment — acoustic rhythm guitar by Brown's wife, Tanya Rae, along with Steve Layne on upright bass and Thomas Eugene Smith playing brushed snare — was equally modest.
