AT RISK OF PROVOKING EITHER THE TRADITIONAL yawn or a punch in the face whenever it is suggested that this is the year of women in rock, there is an inescapable sensation in the US record industry that every night is now Ladies' Nite. The US charts clock their rise to near-dominant commercial force, and at a time when only three or four hands are able to command stadium-sized audiences, an all-women tour last summer showed that the boys of Lollapalooza might as well have stayed at home.
