EXPLAINING THE attraction of the New York Dolls, one tells an out-of-towner about their aggressive intelligence, nearly jingoistic hometown pride, and effortless projection of the most endearing street orphan personality since the Bowery Boys. But French film maker Jacqueline Wester shot the Dolls almost-Altamont at a club in Paris, and I felt betrayed: they looked like Bowery bums.
