FOR A LONG time, its shockwaves obliterated thought altogether. That was the great thing about it: it was anti-matter, it vaporized everything that wasn’t immediate, sensual and cool. Western Thought & the Military Industrial Complex, like a pair of dyspeptic bishops, looked on in horror while rock held its end-of-the-world party.

And then, 13 years on, when rock itself had become a teenager, the Big Bang met Lester Bangs.
