Little Milton: Soul Survivor
Jeff Calvin, Blues Revue, March 2001
THE LONG-DISTANCE call came on a spring day in 1965, from Chicago to the Lone Star State – from blues present to blues past. Leonard Chess sat in his office at 2120 South Michigan Avenue speaking to Little Milton Campbell, one of the last great bluesmen to grace his legendary label. Milton, whose chitlin-circuit stop for the night was Waco, Texas, was about to get some welcome news. "He told me, 'Listen, we got a hit,'" Milton recalled. "Start playing it, and play it a lot."
