Mason Williams: The Mason Williams Phonograph Record

Gene Sculatti, Rolling Stone, 14 September 1968

THE RECORDING DEBUT of Mason Williams is an intriguing affair. The Mason Williams Phonograph Record was released many months ago but only recently has it received any attention, primarily due to the fact that one of its cuts, 'Classical Gas'. is currently a top-selling single. The album is a collection of ideas from a cat who has written seven books and who was the head writer for the Smothers Brothers Show. Here he emerges as another in the growing number of non-mainstream composers; not so avant garde as Van Dyke Parks or Randy Newman, more like Nilsson or even Cat Stevens.
