ONE COOL dude, in shiny black from boots to leather baseball cap, Frankie Beverly was plainly the most surprised man in Hammersmith this week. Without hits, without fanfare, without any sort of reputation outside the soul clubs, his group had not only filled the Odeon on two consecutive nights but had enjoyed a reception as tumultuous as any within my memory.
