THE LEGACY of the ampersand in rock is, frankly, mixed. For every Lennon & McCartney you can bank on the lurking presence of a Foster & Allen or — yikes! — Hue & Cry. We won't even mention Emerson, Lake & Palmer. But it's been a long while indeed since the little squiggly chap has been called upon to mediate between such an illustrious pairing as this.
