IT SEEMS probable that not many of those who gathered last night to hear Mel Tormé and George Shearing at the first of their five London concerts did so in the hope of hearing the Tormé whose streamlined, buttoned-down singing was as emblematic of the cool 1950s as tailfins and espresso machines; certainly the majority seemed happy with what they received.
