THERE'S A TV commercial running on television stations in Sydney that explains a lot about modern-day Australia. The ad is for McDonald's, and seeks to show just how Australian McDonald's is. As a slow pan across Ayers Rock dissolves into a similar view of a Big Mac, we are assured that "prime Aussie beef" and "fresh Tasmanian potatoes" give McDonald's "the best of everything" Down Under.

So much for the vegemite sandwich.
