Music In The Making: Quincy Jones — Sarah Makes It All Worth While

Max Jones, Melody Maker, 12 October 1963

Quincy Jones, who spent last week in London enjoying the sights and sounds by day and night, is one of music's all-rounders. Bandleader, composer, arranger, publisher, MD, trumpet and piano player — Quincy has filled many roles. In Japan he lately added acting to his accomplishments — one would hardly be surprised if at any time he took up architecture or medicine. Now A&R man for Philips-Mercury, Quincy spends much of his working life master-minding sessions for artists who may be jazz singers or rock-n-rollers. Sometimes he writes the arrangements, sometimes he doesn't; sometimes he leads the orchestra, sometimes not. Periodically, he records his own band for instrumental albums, and re-forms to go out briefly on the road. ("It's fun, you know, especially if you can stop when you want to"). In this exclusive music in the making feature he tells Max Jones something of his methods — how he sets about planning a recording session.
