MANFRED MANN: Up The Junction (Fontana TL 5460).
HOW FORTUNATE it is for the Manfreds that this LP of film music — never strictly commercial at the best of times — should coincide with what must have been an unexpected number one single hit. Thus, this will garner more attention, which is good. Because they have obviously put a great deal of thought and care into this atmosphere-laden score which contain a multitude of musical facets which range from pop, through jazz to some very ambitious kinds of modern film music. I particularly liked the title, which somehow puts across a lot of pop life superficiality with the underlying emotions which the film is charged with.
