New Musick: Disco

Davitt Sigerson, Sounds, 3 December 1977

A CLUB; members are photographed, beam-screened at the door, automatically invoiced. Large, low-ceiling, air-conditioned. Bland diffused light. Gunmetal grey walls, carpets, couches. Easily-read digital clocks, so patrons always know exactly how long they've been where they are. Members can hire couples to dance for them, drink for them, and may wish to hire a couple for an entire evening, and watch their employees enjoy themselves on closed-circuit TV. Music Centres (or what used to be called 'record stores') now sell conversation cassettes. Just think: you and your partner can eat a relaxed dinner while professionals conduct the banter on your stereo. It's much easier.
