New York's Turntable Wizards the X-Ecutioners Move the DJ Front and Center

Evelyn McDonnell, Rolling Stone, 27 November 1997

THEY MAY spin records, but don't call the X-Ecutioners DJs. "A DJ will play somebody else's record, say, 'All right, that was this tune,' and play another record," X-Ecutioner Roc Raida says. "We do more than that. We beat-juggle, scratch, do body tricks, play bass, guitar, drums. A turntablist is the same as a pianist or anybody else who plays an instrument. And therefore we're called turntablists instead of DJs."
