Nona Hendryx: The Heat (RCA)

Frank Owen, Melody Maker, 5 October 1985

FROM HER early days with Labelle doing cover versions of the likes of 'Won't Get Fooled Again', to her collaborations with Talking Heads, Bill Laswell and Defunkt on the fringes of New York's avant-funk scene, maverick disco stylist, Nona Hendryx, has always had a penchant for large dollops of heavy rock in her funk. This was no bad thing as was demonstrated on her classic showdown with Material, 'Bustin' Out' — where the familiar bump and grind of the funk orchestration was given a frightening power by the guitar chord slabs that cut across the beat.
