Odysseys and Oddities: Jon Savage compiles the definitive Space-Rock Tape

Jon Savage, MOJO, March 1995

MUSIC AND THE cosmos have a special relationship, bound by mathematics, spirituality and that basic human need to get out there. Just as important as the physical fact of space – i.e. that which is outside the earth’s atmosphere (like the moon, which is a tape all to itself) – are the projections placed onto it by us earthbound mortals: anything from ego-loss, satori or total escapism through to the unassailable disconnection that you can hear in Frank Sinatra’s great 1946 performance of Anderson/Weill’s ‘Lost In the Stars’.
