Paul Simon: The Rhythm Of The Saints

Phil Sutcliffe, Q, December 1990

IN THE CHARTS The Rhythm Of The Saints has already proved itself an apt follow-up to Graceland with 'The Obvious Child' a sizable hit single to match 'You Can Call Me Al'. The latter, especially, is no mean feat for a stubby, charisma-free chap of 49, purveying a style unlike anything else that's ever been commercial. In fact, its host of drums from the streets of Salvador, Brazil, is by far the hardest sound to survive the long, slow filtration process of Simon's trial-and-error writing and recording method.
