Pearl Harbor

Jon Young, Trouser Press, August 1981

THE ROCKABILLY revival currently sweeping England ought to be a bonanza for rock 'n' roll fans, but mostly it's been a dud. While the original rockers certainly had their calculated side — Elvis Presley manipulated crowds and songs adroitly — the goal was hysterical abandon. This new breed, on the other hand, seems more concerned with proper hairstyles than gettin' loose; what ought to be a catharsis usually stops at an expression of cautious reverence. (Ironists will note that these self-styled rebels are just as self-conscious as arty fringe bands.)
