Pere Ubu: Punching the Music Time Clock

Howard Wuelfing, Unicorn Times, May 1978

IF A TELEPHONE pole gets toppled by lightning and no one hears it hit pavement, was there indeed any sound of "thud?" Yeah, don't be silly! But does it matter to anyone besides the pole? Nope! (talking' 'bout the sound now). Similarly, if an artist produces some aesthetic arrangement of materials and then holds it from public purview, does the work still carry artistic value? Of course. But, again, does that count in our eyes? Not one iota!
