IT IS EASY to see why Phil Glass, long recognised as being in the vanguard of American avant-garde composers should have suddenly found himself lionised by rock audiences. For all its sophisticated theoretical grounding, the impact of Glass's music is first and foremost emotional; its most unexpected facet is that it is extremely physical, and at times extremely loud. There were periods during this performance where it felt as if one was being sucked into a vortex of sound with a force and intensity that seemed to literally shake the body.
