SUPPORT FOR The Pixies, Boston's finest, came from Pere Ubu, born again (and again) as cortex-tickling popsters via the Cloudland album. Vocalist David Thomas, a sweating balloon of a man wrapped in a tolerant suit, remains in his own secret dimension, sending himself audible memos, rubbing his hair as if he'd found pigeon droppings in it, mumbling cryptic asides into the microphone. "Any questions so far?" he muttered halfway through.
