Prince: Come (Warner Bros.)

Chuck Eddy, L.A. Weekly, 20 October 1994

OKAY, FIRST off the individuals who used to call themselves Jim Morrison. Elvis Costello and Prince were all the same person! Their music all featured trashy two-fingered '96 Tears' organ tinkling (listen to Prince's 'Shake' and 'Cream'). The Doors ended their 1967 debut LP with 'The End'. Elvis Costello ended his 1977 debut with 'Waiting for the End of the World', and Prince ended his most famous album, Purple Rain, with a title track about the end of the world, plus 'When Doves Cry' was about the same oedipal folderol as 'The End'. They all peaked early in their careers with narcissistic but catchy reductions of Mick Jagger or Johnny Rotten nihilism on their first two or three albums. And they were all obsessed with getting laid.
