LITTLE STEVEN Van Zandt, to his simultaneous worriment and gratification, has become the symbol of the antiapartheid movement outside of South Africa. It's not surprising he ended up in such a role; he arrived in his mid thirties a cult hero — based on his longtime partnership with Bruce Springsteen as guitarist and coproducer for the E Street Band — with a heavy burden of political concerns that hadn't yet found a voice.
