Radiohead: Royal Festival Hall, London

Chris Roberts, Uncut, September 2000

CONFUSED, SCHIZOPHRENIC, sneering and intense yet sometimes transported by innocent joy – Radiohead's audience sure are a strange crowd. The crossover-cult idols' first English gig in 18 months bristles with a bizarre atmosphere. Many advocate reverence. Fewer, ribaldry. If someone stands up and shimmies, they're yelled at to sit down. Prissy and attentive, the believers stroke chins while a handful of dissenters rock out.
