Ray Davies: Album By Album

Nick Hasted, Uncut, November 2007

"MY SONGWRITING has been my ally through life," Ray Davies muses, "because I ain't got much else." As the creative force behind the Kinks, Davies wrote a raft of classic singles rivalled only by the Beatles. But as the band's impact on the charts dwindled, he turned his attention to crafting a series of superb albums about his north London roots, beginning with The Kinks Are The Village Green Preservation Society. Here, he talks Uncut through the best of them, between cups of tea and complaints about the price of pie and mash. He's still London's most contrary customer. Still its greatest songwriter, too.
