Ray Parker, Jr.: Woman Out Of Control (Arista)

Mark Rowland, Musician, February 1984

RAY PARKER, Jr. is a riddle. He's a black, crossover auteur who writes, produces, arranges and pretty much performs everything on his records, claims Motown roots that go back further than Michael Jackson's, infuses his lyrics with enough pro-feminist agitprop to make Marvin Gaye sound like a pimp and has cracked the top ten more often than Prince and Rick James put together. For this he gets about as much attention as Ray Parker, Sr.
