Robert Fripp: A Most Delightful Discourse With One Small, Mobile Intelligent Unit
Jim Sullivan, Sweet Potato, August 1979
THE USUAL ways to write about most rock artists are, I'm afraid, inadequate when one's subject is Robert Fripp. Generally, the writer's task is to capture the essence of the artist and his music through words; most of the time it can be done reasonably well without making too many compromises. With Fripp, however, I found myself to be at an explanatory loss. Fripp is, like his music, an intense man exuding contradictions and paradoxes. For me, choosing one particular Fripp to present would be too much a willful distortion. I threw up my hands and decided upon alternate tactics.
