BATTERY FAILING, headlights down to a dull yellow gleam, the gas guage below empty, we roller-coasted over the last range of hills into Berkeley — home after 12,000 miles. Our spacecraft, a blue Peugeot, is on complete immobility vacation as I ponder its disassembled generator.
