Soundgarden: Badmotorfinger (A&M/All formats)

TWO YEARS ago, Seattle's Soundgarden were poised for a big-time putsch very similar to Nirvana's impending success story. A&M had spotted the obvious sales potential of the Sub Popsters' bullshit-free and occasionally tongue-in-cheek slant on classic metal texts and offered them the keys to the piggy bank. But, in trying to cross over, they fell between the underground and mainstream stools. Their second album, Louder Than Love, sounded too much like any other bunch of faithful Sabbath/Zeppelin copyists, yet was still sufficiently puzzling to leave the trad metal fraternity unmoved. Oops...
