Taking Modern Culture By Strategy: Brian Eno

Mark Sinker, The Wire, October 1992

2005 note: It’s not a sensible criticism of a conjuror that his craft does not involve actual real magical powers. Eno is fascinated by the material operation of any number of cultural tricks: he does stuff which conjures up discussion of same. His failures are also his successes, to anyone else interested in why we let tricks have purchase: what we gain; what we lose. His failure here is my failure: the strong observation half-made in the paragraph labelled "Pretention" gets turned in the main text into mere point-missing nonsense about the inauthenticity of authenticity, i.e. another conversation stuck in yopomo/nopomo Glibly Showoff land.
