THE WILD white girl of Motown (rtd.) links up with Rick James again, and reminds us of a whole slew of things we were forgetting about late 70s R&B. For example, how weirdly over-muscled it still sounds: Teena pumps up her voice and her ideas like a woman body builder signed to SOLAR. Athletics rather than aesthetics provide most of the fascination, and a half-deliberate sleaze dedicated to the sinner rather than the saint in sanctified Marvin Gaye. Dirty soul with oiled limbs.
