Update, 2020: Here is how I came to write the essay below on the Beatles and the Stones for the US intellectual quarterly Partisan Review that follows this Update, and what I believe now. As from the early 1960s I wrote about what was then known as 'popular culture', better termed 'the new media', which I believed were not just offshoots or developments of what had come before, but had their own nature, requiring insight, imagination and new language to identify, understand and nourish them. Not easy! But that was the challenge.
