The Cure: Spectrum Philadelphia, PA

Chuck Eddy, Spin, August 1992

SO WHO'S cooler: Robert Smith or his fans? Well, it depends. From what I saw, none of his devout cultists (at least male ones) have guts enough to dress like him, or wear their hair that way. Smith had on high-top sneakers, flood jeans, and that wacky coiffure, but all the suburban teenage white boys in the audience looked boring and harmless with hair cut neatly above their ears like new lieutenants. I used to be a new lieutenant (ROTC commission, 1982), but my hair looked more like Smith's than anybody else's, and that's just because I'm too lazy to get it cut and it gets sloppy sometimes. I was also the only person besides the guitar player who wore argyle socks.
