The Darkness: SECC, Glasgow

Stephen Dalton, Times, The, December 2004

IN POP, last year's underdog can so easily become this year's one-trick pony. The Darkness ended 2003 as the former rank outsiders who triumphed over their critically overrated peers with infectious tunes, outlandish clothes and self-mocking humour. One year on, loaded with Brits and Ivor Novello awards, feted in America and deconstructed on The South Bank Show, the everybody's favourite pomp-rock populists are no less likeable and no less entertaining. But there is a slight sense of them treading water, not entirely sure where to take this million-album-selling monster they have created.
