"IT'S HARD TO keep a good man down" goes the refrain to one of the songs on Randy Newman's musical version of the Goethe tale, Faust. It is Newman as the Devil, protesting his banishment from Heaven, daring God, played by James Taylor of all people, into a bet that He made a mistake when creating mankind.
