The Eagles: One Of These NIghts

Mick Houghton, Let It Rock, September 1975

I CAN'T THINK of anything good to say about One Of These Nights. What's so distressing is that it's not a bad album by any stretch of the imagination – it just falls short of everything the Eagles have done in the past. If they had a lousy track record this might easily be their first winner. They haven't and this isn't. The album kicks off pleasantly enough – L.A. country rock is never less than pleasant – so perhaps they're pacing this one out? Far from it, they mistime their shots completely as the first side eventually grooves into 'Journey Of The Sorcerer' – as close to muzak as this talented bunch could degenerate to without visibly flinching. The Eagles seem to have become too set in their ideas, churning out too many soundalike songs, all lacking the character of the originals.
