LIKE THE all-conquering Madness during the first half of the '80s, the Housemartins pulled off the admirable trick of shoehorning well-considered social comment into the most radio-friendly of upbeat tunes. Their 1986 debut bristled with melodic catchiness, enabling them to sneak a few uncomfortable lyrical ideas through the back door.
