The Kinks: The Kinks BBC Sessions

Jon Savage, MOJO, April 2001

NO DOUBT it's their sheer longevity, but The Kinks remain curiously undervalued: often cited as a key neo-Mod/Britpop inspiration – as if that's anything to get excited about – but firmly locked out of the pantheon. Blame the red hunting jackets and the '70s concept albums if you like, but The Kinks deserve your total respect: if nothing else because they defined the first base of any rock group – ie, they rocked. What could be more intense than the sight and sound of Dave Davies belting out ‘Milk Cow Blues’ in his destroyed dandy costume?
