WHEN BERRY GORDY JR. moved the Motown empire to Los Angeles in 1971, his plan was for the world’s premier record company to go into the movie business. If you have a hard time thinking of any Motown-produced pictures other than Mahogany and Lady Sings the Blues, perhaps that fact best sums up the wisdom of Gordy’s decision.
