The Mighty Meters

John Abbey, Blues & Soul, 31 August 1973

WITH VIRTUALLY no publicity, the mighty Meters recently came into London as part of the Dr. John entourage. We were fortunate enough to catch up with the quartet's organist, Art Neville, during their stay here. The Meters have been the musical pillar stone for the city of New Orleans for many years now, enjoying their own success in their own right, too. As back-up musicians in the studio, the Meters have played behind Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, Betty Harris and, more recently, of course, the Dr. John album on Atlantic that Allen Toussaint produced — from whence came the monster pop and R&B hit, 'Right Place, Wrong Time'.
