The Rolling Stones: Their Satanic Majesties Request (London)

Paul Nelson, Hullabaloo, March 1968

THEIR SATANIC Majesties Request succeeds by taking enormous chances. One's first impressions' are almost entirely negative: (1) it doesn't sound like the Stones; (2) it sounds random and badly organized; (3) it is difficult to listen to as music and as entertainment. Happily, the disappointing initial reaction soon fades, and the majesty of Majesties begins to take command. By the second or third listening, a groundwork has been found and it is apparent that the album is a masterpiece.
