The Velvet Underground

Geoffrey Cannon, The Guardian, 8 January 1971

Update, 2020: Judging by what I play most as I work at home, the Velvet Underground and also Lou Reed are tops, together with Them and also Van Morrison. Lately I have been reviewing and playing the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and CSN without and with Y, and the Kinks and Ray Davies. But I return to Lou and Van and their various bands. This places me in the time between 1968 and 1972 when I was the weekly rock writer for The Guardian, with opportunities to write long pieces for US newspapers that already had lots of space, and for magazines.

Total word count of piece: 1801
