Through Time With The Minutemen

Byron Coley, L.A. Weekly, 25 March 1983

OFTEN THE mention of a band will bring a visual and/or sonic image to the tip of one's lobe. The words 'Mau Mau' are spake and you "see" a million loaded syringes flying towards your arm; the person next to you whispers "Germs" and the next thing you "hear" is the fey guitar intro to Yes' 'Roundabout' splinter into the throat-ripping six-string CRANG of 'No God'. Well, when I hear the name "Minutemen," my head fills with a word, and that word is MEAT. It's the one syllable that aptly conveys the band's sound, presence and power. And though this may not sit well with the vegetarian set, I defy any of their number to name me a fruit or vegetable that adequately describes this magnificent band.
