Todd Terry: Can You Feel It?

Sheryl Garratt, The Face, October 1988

LONDON, JULY. The police, finally twigging onto the city's thriving house scene, raid a warehouse just south of the river. Instead people stand around, dancing to the music on car stereos, talking in groups, halfheartedly hoping that the party will go on. To disperse them, the police turn on their sirens, and suddenly the crowd come to life, dancing frenziedly and chanting in unison: "Can U feel it?" The boys in blue look shattered — how were they to know they were playing the hookline from a Todd Terry record?
