HAVING LIVED next door to the Tom Petty Experience — a guy who strapped himself into his Strat to make up new solo parts for 'Refugee' for two years, I have every right to not be a massive Tom Petty fan. But the one thing I have always admired about him was that his voice sounded exactly like his mouth was shaped — like Tom Verlaine with more melody and less French poetry.
