Tom Waits: Blue Valentine (Asylum)

Richard C. Walls, Creem, February 1979

ONCE I WAS really drunk in this very fancy bar where they had this woman playing piano, looked like somebody's grandmother, and I kept asking her to play 'Body And Soul' but she wouldn't. Maybe she didn't know it. Anyway, when she took a break I slid onto the stool, having decided that I was gonna play it myself. I was a good twelve bars into the song before I remembered that I couldn't play the piano.
