AS A PERFORMER, Tom Waits seems closer to Patti Smith and Bruce Springsteen than to anyone else currently working in rock; unlike them, however, Waits draws not so much on rock & roll references to achieve his effects as on cool jazz and the beatnik idiom of the Fifties.
