Trouble Funk: Trouble Over Here (Island)

Simon Reynolds, Melody Maker, 5 September 1987

GO-GO limps on. Go go has flopped so many times now (the movie was a disaster, the Pepe jeans tie-in a farce) and each time it's rallied for a new assault the accompanying media hype looks less convincing, less convinced. It's becoming less and less plausible to pretend that go-go is on the verge of breaking out all over. The kids aren't interested. Go-go has been given as fair a chance as is likely in pop's competitive market (like or loathe it, pop isn't organised like the GLC, with fair allotments of representation for every clamouring minority); as fair a chance as hip hop and House ever got. Unlike hip hop and House, go-go has failed.
