BY THEIR OWN admission, the members of U2 had little sense of history when they started making music. Like so many of their generation, the world began with Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols and went on from there. Fortunately, the four Irishmen of U2 were smart enough to realize that a lack of history left them vulnerable to an industry that cared more about trends than tradition. Since 1984, U2 has been consciously searching for a cultural tradition that they can lay claim to and build upon.
