THERE ARE four remaining survivors from the English Invasion: the Kinks, the Hollies, the Rolling Stones, and Van Morrison. All four of these have wound up major artists over the years, strangely enough in almost four distinctly different categories — but none of the four seem in as strong a position today as Van Morrison. Tupelo Honey, Van's latest album, is probably the finest LP of his whole career; avoiding the minor flaws of his recent albums, it must be one of the most carefully programmed (i.e., type and order of songs) rock albums ever, as well as one of the plain best albums I've ever heard. But to start from the beginning....
